語源
「antisymmetrical」は現代英語の構成語で，ギリシャ語接頭辞『anti-』（『ἀντί』：反対）と『symmetrical』（ギリシャ語『συμμετρία』経由の語で『釣り合い・比例』）の結合に由来する。
『antisymmetrical』は形容詞『symmetrical』（古仏語『symétrie』，ラテン語/ギリシャ語『symmetria』に由来）に接頭辞『anti-』を付けて作られ，19〜20世紀に数学や物理の専門用語として定着した。
当初は単に「対称ではない」という意味だったが，のちに数学（関係論での反対称）や線形代数／物理（行列・テンソルの斜対称）で専門的な意味を持つようになった。
