「antiochian」は英語の地名『Antioch』に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語の『Antiocheia』（古代ギリシャ語『Αντιόχεια』）に由来する。語根は人名『Antiochos（Ἀντίοχος）』である。
英語では地名『Antioch』がラテン語『Antiochia』や中世の表記を経て、形容詞化接尾辞『-ian』が付され『Antiochian』となり『アンティオキアの・出身の』を意味する語として定着した。やがてアンティオキア正教会との結びつきを示す用法も生じた。
