『Antioch』は古代ギリシア語の単語『Antiocheia（Ἀντιόχεια）』に由来し、セレウコス朝の人名『Antiochus（Ἀντίοχος）』にちなんで名づけられた。
『Antiocheia』はラテン語で『Antiochia』となり、中世ラテン語やヨーロッパ諸語に現れる形を経て、現代英語の『Antioch』になった。
