語源
「antinovel」は英語起源で、接頭辞『anti-』はギリシャ語の『anti』（〜に対して）に由来し、『novel』は古フランス語の『novel』、さらに遡ればラテン語の『novellus』（新しい）に由来します。
『antinovel』は20世紀に英語で『anti-』と既存の語『novel』を結合して作られ、従来の小説に『反する』作品を指す語として用いられるようになりました。
当初は『伝統的な小説に対する／小説ではない』という意味合いでしたが、次第に物語の慣習を転覆する実験的・形式主義的な小説を指すように意味が特化しました。
