語源
「antimetric」は接頭辞「anti-」（ギリシャ語、反対・〜に対して）と「metric」（ラテン語/ギリシャ語の「metron」＝測ること）から成る語である。
「metric」はギリシャ語の' metron'（「測る」）を経て古フランス語・後期ラテン語から英語に入った。『antimetric』は英語で'anti-'を付して作られ、後に数学などの専門領域で特定の用法（反対称性など）を持つようになった。
元来は「測定に反する／測定に対して反対」という一般的な意味に分解できたが、数学では特に反対称（A^T = -A）を指す技術的意味を帯びるようになり、同時により広い非メトリックの意味も残っている。
