「antimensia」は、後期ギリシア語の 'antimēnsion'（ἀντιμήνσιον）を経て後期ラテン語の 'antimensionem' から来ており、接頭辞 'anti-' は「（〜の）代わりに」を、ラテン語の 'mēnsa'／'mensa' は「卓（テーブル）」を意味した。
『antimension』は後期ギリシア語の 'antimēnsion' から教会ラテン語の 'antimensionem' を経て英語に入り、複数形 'antimensia' は教会語で用いられるギリシア／ラテンの複数形に従っている。
