語源
「antimension」は中世ラテン語の語「antimensium」に由来し、接頭辞「anti-」は「〜の代わりに」を、語根「mensa」は「机（祭壇の台）」を意味していた。
「antimension」は中世ギリシャ語の語「antimēnion」や中世ラテン語の「antimensium」から変化し、最終的に現代英語の「antimension」になった。
当初は「机（祭壇台）の代わり」を意味していたが、次第に「（聖遺物を納めた）祭壇の代用品となる聖布」を指す現在の意味に変化した。
