「antimensions」は中世ラテン語の語 'antimensionem' に由来し、接頭辞 'anti-' は「〜の代わり」、ラテン語 'mensa' は「テーブル（祭壇）」を意味した。
『antimension』は中世ラテン語 'antimensionem'（教会での用法経由）から変化して現代英語の 'antimension' と複数形 'antimensions' になった。
当初は『テーブル（祭壇）の代わり』というより広い意味で使われたが、次第にその役割を果たす特定の聖布を指す語に変化した。
