語源
「antifreeze」は接頭辞の「anti-」（ギリシャ語由来で「対抗・反対」を意味）と動詞「freeze」（古英語の「frēosan」で「凍る」を意味）の結合から成る複合語です。
古英語の動詞「frēosan」は中英語を経て現代英語の「freeze」となり，「anti-」を付けた複合語「antifreeze」は19世紀後半〜20世紀初頭に技術用語として生まれました。
もともとは「凍結に対するもの（凍るのを防ぐもの）」という文字通りの意味で作られ、現在も主に冷却剤や不凍液を指す意味で使われています。
