語源
「coolant」は現代英語の語形成で、形容詞「cool」と（フランス語・ラテン語経由で借用された）作用を示す接尾辞「-ant」から成り、「cool」は「やや冷たい」という意味で「-ant」は「〜するもの」を示した。
「cool」は古英語の「cōl/col」から来て「暖かくない、冷たい」を意味し、さらにプロト・ゲルマン語の語根 *kōlaz にさかのぼる。接尾辞「-ant」はラテン語の「-ans/-ant-」が古フランス語を経て英語に入ったもので、19世紀に「cool」に付いて「冷やすもの」を意味する「coolant」ができた。
当初は「冷やすもの」を意味する語として作られ、現在でも基本的な意味は保たれており、エンジンや原子炉など技術分野に広がっている。
