「antiestablishment」は2つの要素から成る。接頭辞「anti-」はギリシャ語の 'anti'（『反対』）に由来し、名詞 'establishment' は動詞 'establish' に由来する英語語である。
「antiestablishment」は近代英語で 'anti-'＋『establishment』を結合して生じた。『establishment』は中英語を経て古フランス語の 'establir'／'establiss-'、さらにラテン語 'stabilire'／'stabilis'（安定した）に遡る。以前は 'anti-establishment' のようにハイフンつきがよく使われた。
当初は（20世紀中頃）政治的な『エスタブリッシュメント』への反対を指したが、意味は拡大して主流の文化・社会・制度的規範への反対全般を指すようになった。
