語源
「anticoincidence」は現代英語で、接頭辞「anti-」（ギリシャ語の 'anti'）と名詞「coincidence」（フランス語 'coïncidence'〈ラテン語 'coincidentia'〉）から成り、'anti-'は「反対」を、ラテン語の'co-'は「一緒に」、'incidere'は「落ちる・起こる」を意味した。
「anticoincidence」は技術用語としてハイフン付きの 'anti-coincidence' から発展し、'coincidence' はフランス語 'coïncidence' を経てラテン語 'coincidentia' から英語に入った。後に一語として用いられることがある。
最初は「同時に起きることに反する／同時に起きないこと」を意味していたが、次第に放射線や粒子検出で同時発生信号を除外する回路や仕組みという専門的な意味を持つようになった。
