語源
「antichthon」はギリシャ語の構成要素『anti-（対・反）』と『khthōn（地・地面）』に由来する。
古典ギリシャ語の『ἀντίχθων（antíkhtōn）』から学術ラテン語・新ラテン語を経て、古代の宇宙論や古典文献の議論で英語に取り入れられた。
当初は文字どおり『反対の地』を指したが、時代とともに意味は限定され、実務的な天文学用語というより文学的・学術的に『反地球』や対蹠的な対応物を表す語になった。
