「counterearth」は近代英語で形成された複合語で、接頭辞「counter-」（ラテン語 'contra' に由来し「反対・対抗」の意）と「Earth」（古英語『eorþe』に由来）から成る．
「counter-」は古フランス語 'contre' 経由でラテン語 'contra' から英語に入り、'Earth' は古英語『eorþe』や原ゲルマン語 '*erþō' に遡る．「counterearth」は近代英語で哲学的・フィクション的用法として作られた語である．
