語源
「counter-Earth」は近代英語で形成された複合語で、接頭辞の「counter-」（最終的にはラテン語の『contra』＝反対・対抗を意味する）と「Earth」（古英語『eorþe』＝地・土・土地を意味する）から成る。
「counter-Earth」は古代ギリシャ語の用語『Antichthon』（ἀντίχθων）の英訳的表現で、ピタゴラス派が用いた「反対の地」を表す語に由来する。ギリシャ語の「anti-」は「反対」、「chthon」は「地・土地」を意味する。近代英語の複合語はその考えを表すために後に成立した。
当初はピタゴラス派の仮想惑星『Antichthon』を指したが、時間の経過とともに太陽の反対側にある仮想・架空の惑星やフィクション上の『鏡像の地球』を指す一般的な語に広がった。
