語源
「antichrist」は中世ラテン語の語『antichristus』に由来し、さらにギリシャ語の『antichristos』（『anti-』は「反する」、『christos』は「油注がれた者（キリスト）」）にさかのぼる。
『antichristos』（ギリシャ）→『antichristus』（ラテン）を経て教会ラテン語から中英語に入り、現代英語の『antichrist』になった。
当初は偽メシアやキリストに対抗する者を指したが、次第にキリスト教の敵一般や比喩的に極めて邪悪な人物を指すように広がった。
