語源
『antichrist』はギリシャ語の『antichristos』に由来し、『anti-』は「反対」を、『christos』は「油注がれた者（キリスト）」を意味した。
『antichristos』は後期ラテン語の『antichristus』を経て、中英語・近代英語の『antichrist』になった。
もともとは「油注がれた者（キリスト）に対抗する者」を指した宗教的な語だったが、現在ではその宗教的意味を保ちつつ、比喩的に「大いなる敵」や「堕落をもたらす者」を指す用法も発展した。
