現代英語で形成された語で、接頭辞『anti-』（ギリシャ語由来で『反〜』の意）＋『authoritarianism』（'authoritarian'の名詞形）＋接尾辞『-ism』（学説・主義を示す）から成る。
『authoritarian』はラテン語の'auctoritas'（権威）に由来し、それが英語で'authoritarian'になり、接尾辞'-ism'で'authoritarianism'となった。そこに'anti-'が付いて『antiauthoritarianism』が作られた。
