「anti-modernity」は近代英語で生まれ、ギリシャ語由来の接頭辞『anti-』(「反対」)と名詞『modernity』を結合している。
『modernity』はフランス語の『modernité』、中世ラテン語の『modernus』から来ており、ラテン語の『modo』（「ちょうど今」）に由来する。接頭辞『anti-』との結合で現代英語の複合語『anti-modernity』になった。
