「anti-lexicography」は現代英語の複合語で、反対を示すギリシャ語由来の接頭辞「anti（ἀντί）」と、ギリシャ語の語根「lexis（語）」「graphein（書く）」からラテン語やフランス語を経て英語化した「lexicography（辞書学）」とを組み合わせてできている。
「anti-lexicography」は、ギリシャ語起源の語根を含む英語の名詞「lexicography」に接頭辞「anti-」を付して作られた現代の複合語で、20世紀後半から21世紀にかけての批評・文学の議論で用いられるようになった。
もともとは「辞書学に対する反対」を文字どおり意味したが、辞書作成の実践への理論的批判や辞書規範を意図的に覆す創作的実践を含む広い用法に拡張された。
