語源
「lexicography」はギリシャ語の語『lexikon』と『graphein』に由来し、『lexikon』は「語彙・語の一覧」を、『graphein』は「書くこと」を意味した。
この語はギリシャ語の語根を通じてラテン語／新ラテン語やフランス語の語形成に入り、17世紀以降に英語で辞書編纂を指す語として定着した。
当初は文字通り「語について書くこと」を意味したが、次第に辞書を作る実務と辞書作成の学術的研究の両方を指すようになった。
