語源
「anime」は日本語の「アニメ」に由来し、その「アニメ」は「アニメーション」の短縮形。さらに「アニメーション」は英語 'animation'（語源はラテン語 'anima'「魂・生命」）からの借用。
英語 'animation' → 日本語「アニメーション」 → 日本語「アニメ」 → 英語の 'anime' として20世紀後半に一般化し、現代英語の 'anime' となった。
当初は日本語で「アニメーション全般」を指したが、英語では意味が狭まり「日本のアニメ（およびその様式の作品）」を指すようになった。
