語源
「US-style」は英語の略語「U.S.」（United States：合衆国）に由来する。「United」は最終的にラテン語の'unitus'（結びついた）に由来し、「state」はラテン語の'status'（状態・地位）に由来する。'style'は古フランス語'estile'、ラテン語'stilus'（元は筆記具の意）から来ており、後に「様式・様態」の意となった。
元の表現は'United States style'（合衆国風の様式）で、用法が簡略化されて'U.S.-style'になり、現在はハイフンでつないだ'US-style'が一般的に使われる。'U.S.'自体は国名の短縮形として発達した。
