語源
「pelican」はギリシャ語の『pelekan（ペレカノス）』に由来し、『pelekys』は『斧（おの）』を意味した（くちばしの形に由来すると考えられる）。
『pelican』は中世ラテン語の『pelecanus』、古フランス語の『pelican』、中英語の『pellican』を経て現代英語の『pelican』になった。
当初はその鳥自体を指す語だったが、やがてキリスト教の図像学で慈愛や自己犠牲の象徴としての意味も帯びるようになった。
