「Congo」はキコンゴ語の名称「Kongo」から来ており、コンゴ人およびコンゴ王国の名称である。ヨーロッパ側ではポルトガル語を通じて記録された。
「Congo」はポルトガルの探検者により記録され、他のヨーロッパ語に入った。その後、この名前は川や盆地・地域に、さらに現代のコンゴと呼ばれる国々にも使われるようになった。
