語源
「Kongo」はバントゥ語のキコンゴ語に由来し、もともとその土地と人々を指す先住民の名称『Kongo』であった。
15〜16世紀にポルトガル人によって『Congo』と記録され、ポルトガル語・欧州諸語の綴りが外部での呼称に影響を与えた。一方で『Kongo』は先住民形を反映し、歴史・人類学の文脈で用いられることが多い。
当初は特定の民族や王国を指したが、時代とともに周辺地域、関連言語、また外来形の『Congo』を通じて川や現代国家名にも広く使われるようになった。
