語源
『Alsatia』は中世ラテン語の語形『Alsatia』に由来し、最終的には古フランス語の『Alsace』やドイツ語の『Elsass』（古高ドイツ語『Elsāz』）に遡る。
『Alsatia』は中世ラテン語／古フランス語の形でアルザス地方を指す語として英語に入り、17世紀頃にはロンドンのホワイトフライアーズ地区にもその名が用いられ、そこから『避難所・法の及ばない場所』という第二の意義を持つようになった。
当初は「アルザス地方」を意味していたが、ロンドンの地区名としての用法から「避難所・法の及ばない避難地」という意味が派生した。
