語源
「Alsace」はドイツ語の「Elsass」に由来する。ここで「Els」は地元の川（イル川）を指し、接尾辞「-ass」／古高地ドイツ語の「-āz」は「定住地・領域」を表した。
中世ラテン語で「Alsatia」と表記され、古高地ドイツ語で「Elsāz／Elsass」と呼ばれた後、古フランス語・近代フランス語を経て英語の「Alsace」になった。
当初はイル川沿いの土地・集落を指していたが、時代を経て現在のフランス北東部の州・地域名として定着した。
