語源
『well-aligned』は『well』＋『aligned』の複合語。『well』は古英語の『wel』（良い形で）に由来し、『aligned』は動詞『align』の過去分詞形で、これは古フランス語の『aligner』を経てラテン語の『linea』（線）に由来する。
『align』はラテン語の『linea』から（俗ラテン語・古フランス語の『aligner』を通じて）発展し、中英語に入って『線に揃える』という意味を持つようになった。過去分詞の『aligned』が副詞『well』と結びつき、現代の複合語『well-aligned』になった。
もともとは『線に揃える』という文字通りの意味だったが、次第に目的や方針などが『一致している／整合している』という比喩的意味にも拡大し、現在は物理的な整列と方針の整合の両方で用いられる。
