語源
「untwist」は古英語の接頭辞「un-」と名詞・動詞「twist」から成る。接頭辞「un-」は「否定」や「逆にする」を意味し、「twist」は「ねじる・巻く」を指した。
「twist」は古英語やゲルマン語の語根に由来し「回す・ねじる」の意味を持っていた。中英語で接頭辞 un- を付けて「ねじれを解く・逆にする」を表す語が作られ、やがて現代英語の 'untwist' に発展した。
当初は「ねじれを元に戻す・ほどく」を意味しており、今日でも文字どおりの意味・比喩的な意味の両方で同様の意味合いを保っている。
