語源
「un-American」は英語に由来し、接頭辞「un-」と単語「American」から成り、「un-」は「…でない」を意味し、「American」は「アメリカに関連する」を指した。
「American」は16世紀初めにイタリアの探検家アメリゴ・ヴェスプッチ（ラテン語形は 'Americus Vespucius'）にちなみ命名された地名「America」から派生し、そこから形容詞「American」が生まれ、英語で接頭辞「un-」が付いて「un-American」となった。
当初は中立的に「アメリカに属さない／アメリカに関するものではない」を意味したが、20世紀の政治的用法を通じて「アメリカの価値観に反する／不愛国的」といった非難の意味合いが強くなった。
