語源
'trichome'はギリシャ語の語 'trichōma'（古代ギリシャ語 τρίχωμα）に由来し、'trich-'は「毛」、'-ōma'（または'-oma'）は「成長（腫瘍）」を意味した。
'trichome'はニューラテン語の'trichoma'として用いられ、その後19世紀に英語の'trichome'として借用された。
当初は『毛状の成長（ときに腫瘍）』を指したが、次第に植物学的な用法に特化し、『植物の表皮における毛状の突出（保護や分泌機能を持つ）』という現在の意味になった。
