語源
「tongue-tie」は英語に由来し、'tongue'（古英語 'tunge'、原ゲルマン語 *tungōn に由来）と 'tie'（古英語 'tīegan'/'tīgan'、「縛る」を意味）という語の結合で、文字通り「舌を縛る」を意味する。
「tongue-tie」は中英語期の 'tongue-tye' や 'tongue tye' のような語形から発展し、やがて現代英語の 'tongue-tie' として定着し、文字どおりと比喩的な意味の両方で用いられるようになった。
当初は文字どおり舌を縛る行為を指したが、次第に先天的な状態（舌小帯短縮症）や感情・恥ずかしさで言葉が出なくなる比喩的な意味にも拡大した。
