語源
「sympathy」はギリシャ語の『sympatheia』に由来し、『syn-』は「ともに」、『pathos』は「感情（感じ）」を意味しました。
『sympatheia』は後期ラテン語の『sympathia』を経て中英語の『sympathy』となり、現代英語の『sympathy』に発展しました。
当初は「同じ感情を持つこと（仲間的感情）」を意味しており、現在でもその核心は保持されつつ、「哀れみ／同情」「弔意」などの具体的な意味が発達しました。
