語源
「survivor」はラテン語の「supervivere」から来ており、「super-」は「上（over）」を、「vivere」は「生きる」を意味した。
「supervivere」は古フランス語の「survivre」を経て中英語の「survivour」（等）になり、最終的に現代英語の「survivor」になった。
元々は「（文字通り）〜を越えて生きる人」を意味していたが、時間とともに「災害・病気・他者の死などを乗り越えて生き残った人」という現在の意味に発展した。
