語源
「surveil」はフランス語、具体的には「surveiller」に由来し、接頭辞「sur-」は「〜の上に／越えて」、語幹「veiller」は「見張る」を意味しました。
「surveil」は名詞「surveillance」からの逆形成（back-formation）であり、「surveillance」は古フランス語の「surveillier／surveillier」から発展し、最終的にはラテン語系の「vigilare」にさかのぼります。英語への導入は主に18〜19世紀のフランス語からでした。
