語源
「submarginal」はラテン語の接頭辞「sub-」（「下に」）と「marginal」（ラテン語由来の「margin」から、古フランス語「marge」を経て）の結合でできており、「margin」は「端・境界」を意味した。
「margin」は古フランス語「marge」を経て後期ラテン語の「margo（または margin-）」から英語に入り、ラテン語の接頭辞「sub-」が英語の「marginal」と結合して近代英語で「submarginal」が作られた。
もともとは「縁の下にある」という文字どおりの意味だったが、「基準・採算を下回る」といった比喩的な意味や、生態学・経済学での専門的な用法に広がった。
