語源
「stupefy」はラテン語の「stupefacere」から来ており、ここで「stupe-」（ラテン語の「stupēre」から）は「びっくりする・感覚が麻痺する」を意味し、「facere」は「作る」を意味します。
「stupefacere」は古フランス語／中世フランス語の『estupifier』や『estupéfier』の形を経て、近代初期に英語に入った後、現代英語の『stupefy』になりました。
当初は『感覚を麻痺させる・ぼう然とさせる』（主に物理的な意味）を指していましたが、次第に『非常に驚かせる・精神的にぼう然とさせる』という意味に広がり、現在ではその両方の用法が見られます。
