語源
「solicitor」は古仏語の『soliciteur』に由来し、最終的にはラテン語の『sollicitare』から来ている。語根の『sollicit-』は「動揺させる・かき立てる」を意味した。
『solicitor』は古仏語の『soliciteur』→中英語の『solicitour』を経て、現代英語の『solicitor』になった。
当初は「（強く）促す人・懇願する人」を指したが、徐々に「法律事務を扱う専門家」や「営業・勧誘を行う人」といった専門化した意味に変化した。
