語源
「sceptic」は近代ラテン語の「scepticus」に由来し、ギリシャ語の語根「skept-」（「skeptesthai」から派生）は「見る、調べる」を意味した。
「sceptic」はギリシャ語の「skeptikos」→ラテン語の「scepticus」→古フランス語/中世ラテン語の形を経て、中英語の「sceptik」となり、最終的に現代英語の「sceptic」になった。
当初は「吟味する・熟考する人」を意味していたが、時を経て「既成の信念に疑いを持つ人」という現在の主要な意味に変化した。
