語源
「sanctification」はラテン語の「sanctificatio」から来ており、「sanctus」は「聖なる」を意味し、「facere」に由来する語根（fic-）は「作る」を意味した。
「sanctificatio」は後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語を経て中英語の「sanctificacioun」などの形になり、最終的に現代英語の「sanctification」になった。
当初は「神聖にする行為・奉献」を意味しており、時を経てもその中心的意味は保たれているが、宗教的文脈では「成聖（継続的な霊的変容）」という意味合いも強くなった。
