語源
「sacral」はラテン語「sacrālis」から来ており、語根「sacer」は「神聖な」を意味した。
「sacral」はラテン語の「sacrālis」や中世ラテン語の形から発展し、解剖学的意味は中世の解剖書で使われたラテン語「os sacrum」（「神聖な骨」）の影響を受け、結果的に中英語や学術ラテン語を経て近代英語の「sacral」になった。
当初は「神聖に関する」を意味していたが、時代とともに「仙骨に関する（解剖学的）」という意味も生じ、現代では両方の用法が残っている。
