語源
「rheumatism」はギリシャ語の語『rheuma』（『流れるもの』を指す）に由来し、そこから後期ラテン語の『rheumatismus』を経て英語に入った。
『rheumatism』は後期ラテン語の『rheumatismus』や中世ラテン語の用法から中英語を経て現代英語の形になった。
当初は『痛みを引き起こす体液の流れ』を意味していたが、次第に『関節や筋肉・結合組織に痛みや炎症を引き起こすさまざまな病気』という現在の意味に変化した。
