語源
「reversibility」はラテン語の『revertere』に由来し、『re-』は「後ろへ」、『vertere』は「回す（向ける）」を意味した。
『reversibility』はラテン語のLate Latin『reversibilis』や中世〜近代フランス語の『reversibilité』を経て、科学・法律用語として英語に入った。
当初は文字通り「後ろに戻せる性質」を意味したが、次第に熱力学での可逆過程や数学での逆可能性といった専門的な意味を含むようになった。
