語源
「retro-」はラテン語で「後ろへ」、語幹の「flectere/ flex-」は「曲げる」を意味するラテン語に由来する。
「retroflex」は新ラテン語の「retroflexus（retro- と flectere の過去分詞形）」に由来し、解剖学や後に音声学で用いられ、19世紀に英語へ導入された。
元来は「後ろに曲がった」という一般的・解剖学的意味だったが、次第に「舌を後方へ曲げて作る（音）」という音声学的な専門用語の意味を帯びるようになった。
