語源
『retroclusion』はラテン語に由来し、接頭辞『retro-』は「後ろ」を意味し、動詞語根『occludere』／名詞形『occlusio』（ラテン語の『claudere』に由来）は「閉じる・塞ぐ」を意味する。
『retro-』と後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語の『occlusio／occludere』（『claudere』由来）を組み合わせて「後方の閉鎖」を意味する語として英語に形成され、現在の専門用語『retroclusion』になった。
当初は「後ろに向かって閉じる」という文字どおりの意味だったが、時とともに歯科などの専門分野で使われる「後方咬合・後方変位」を指す語に専門化した。
