語源
「responsory」は後期ラテン語の単語「responsorium」に由来し、ラテン語の「respondere」（『応答する』）から来ている（re-『戻る』＋spondere『誓う／応答する』）。
教会ラテン語や古仏語を経て英語に入り、後期ラテン語の「responsorium」は典礼用語として用いられ、中英語を経て現代英語の「responsory」になった。
当初は「応答するもの」「返答」を指していたが、次第にキリスト教の礼拝で用いられる特定の歌唱的応答を意味するようになった。
