語源
「reductio」はラテン語に由来し、もともとラテン語の語形「reductio」から来ており、『re-』は「後ろへ」を、『ducere/duct-』は「導く」を意味した。
「reductio」は中世・スコラ哲学のラテン語表現を経て、主に「reductio ad absurdum」の形で英語の学術語彙に取り入れられた。
当初は「引き戻すこと」や「還元」を意味していたが、英語では次第に「命題を矛盾に還元して示す議論法（背理法）」という専門的な意味に特化していった。
