語源
'recto'と'verso'はラテン語由来です。'recto'はラテン語の'rectus'（正しい・まっすぐ）に由来し、'verso'は'versus'（向けられた・回された）に由来します。
'recto'は中世ラテン語・イタリア語の'recto'などを経て、用紙の表（右側の面）を指す語として英語に入ってきました。'verso'も同様に中世ラテン語・イタリア語の'verso'を経て裏面を指す語になりました。
もともとは「まっすぐ・正しい」「回された」を意味しましたが、時間とともに用紙の表と裏を指す専門的な意味へ変化しました。
