語源
「reclusive」はラテン語の過去分詞『reclusus』（『recludere』より）に由来し、『re-』は「後へ/back」、「claudere/cludere」は「閉じる」を意味した。
ラテン語『reclusus』は中世ラテン語で『reclusivus』となり、中英語を経て英語の『reclusive』になり、形容詞に接尾辞 -ly を付けて副詞『reclusively』が作られた。
もともとは「後ろへ閉じられた／閉ざされた」を指したが、時代とともに自発的に社会から離れること、すなわち「人里離れて暮らす」という現在の意味に発展した。
